Pioneer Study 02 (S2) | Tracking the efficacy of sofi passiflora formulation in aid of better sleep
The ever increasing prevalence of sleeplessness and sleep disorders globally presents a significant public health challenge. Given the limitations of modern pharmacological treatments, including side effects and dependency, there is an increasing demand for effective, natural interventions compatible with self-medication.
This research employs a novel approach by integrating digital health technologies for individualised monitoring and optimisation of interventions based on formulations of Passiflora incarnata (Passiflora). Prior studies have shown mixed evidence for this botanical to offer promising therapeutic benefits, with the variability in individual responses highlighting the need for a personalised treatment paradigm.
This study aims to fill this gap by exploring the potential of Passiflora supplements to enhance sleep duration and quality through a personalised, technology-enhanced methodology. First, the formulated Passiflora extract was investigated with Liquid Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry and found to be authentic and to contain the expected active substances. Data were then recorded for self-reported sleep metrics and self-medication use of Passiflora formulation. Ingestion of an average of 0.67 ml of the formulation per day resulted in a mean improvement in reported sleep time of 46 minutes 95% confidence interval: 14–78 minutes), a mean increase in sleep continuity of 17% (95%CI: 9.3–25%) and a mean increase in sleep quality of 21% (95%CI: 13–28). Measured effects demonstrated a dose-dependent relationship, suggesting an influence of the active compounds.
The overall results suggest that Passiflora supplementation has a significant positive impact on all self-reported sleep parameters – namely sleep duration, continuity and quality. These findings are consistent with the hypothesis that Passiflora incarnata has dose-dependent effects on sleep, promoting both an increase in sleep duration and improvements in sleep quality and continuity.
Employing a personalised, technology-enhanced approach, this study presents data supporting the notion that daily administration of a Passiflora extract leads to notable improvements in self-reported sleep duration, continuity, and quality among participants. Specifically, an average increase of 46 minutes in sleep time and enhancements of 17% in sleep continuity and 21% in sleep quality were observed, supported by statistical significance in two-sided statistical tests.
